HISTORY OF THE CLUB
The Lions Club in Alghero was founded in 1982 due to the fortunate meeting of two local doctors: the late Ruggero Colombino, Director of the Obstetrics Department and Lorenzo Zicconi at that time a young radiology assistant. These two founding fathers became respectively the first president and secretary of the club. Professor Colombino was already member of the Lions Club in Ozieri ( a charming town in the north of Sardinia, ca. 40km from Sassari)  so he logically turned to one of his colleagues  at the Ozieri club in the 108 L district, the very active and charismatic engineer Fausto Cadoni ( unfortunately, deceased ). This commendable “Lion guide” provided extremely valuable help, advice and experience in the birth of our new Lion Club in Alghero, which finally came to fruition in April 1982 in a memorable assembly at one of the Charter Member’s  Hotel, “El Balear”.
After various preliminary meetings the Alghero Club was officially recognized on the 2nd of June 1982 ( sponsored by the club in Ozieri )  and the Charter was consigned that same year by the Governor Brunello Brettoni, a distinguished phthisiologist in Florence (at that time our 108 L District was already comprised of the Regions of Tuscany, Lazio, Umbria and Sardinia, which it still does to this day).  The birth of the new club was celebrated by a significant participation of Lions from all over the District, especially from our own Sardinian Region, not to mention Lions from our neighbouring island of Corsica. At that time there were only a dozen or so of Lions Clubs in Sardinia and due to unfavourable circumstances it had not been previously possible to extend the Lions International to Alghero, despite it being the fourth most populated city in Sardinia. The inaugural Charter day was particularly memorable for those who took part: the Lions of Alghero presented all the female guests with a necklace made from the precious coral that grows in Alghero which can also be found on the official city coat of arms.
The first year was notable for two important services in a long and successful series of activities: the first was the donation of a motorized tiller to an association that helps rehabilitate drug addicts; the second was the restoration of two antique silver lamps belonging to the S. Maria cathedral under the supervision of one of our founding members, Salvatore De Martis, painter and art professor.  In the meantime,  the activities of the Alghero Lions have spread out into numerous areas

1st March 2013 – Conference and open debate at schools on the National Study Theme “Abuse of minors and violence against women: combating the silence”

In line with the “Declaration for the elimination of violence against women” of the United Nations in 1993 the Lions have decided to adopt this theme for the Lionist year 2012-2013 as a national study theme, that is to say,  to realize a project of awareness about violence in general with the title: “Abuse of minors and violence against women: combating the silence”.  Our Club also decided to follow the national initiative and organize various events with the patronage of the Commune of Alghero and numerous participants, such as the M.D. and  councilor Romina Caula and with the collaboration of the Centre Against Violence in Sassari. The first conference aimed at the town inhabitants was organized on the 1st of March at 18:30 at the Hotel Catalunya and the second the following day for students of the local high schools; from 9:30 to 11:00 at the Technical and Industrial Institute and from 11:30 to 13:00 at the Scientific High School Fermi.

1st March 2013 – Conference and open debate at schools on the National Study Theme “Abuse of minors and violence against women: combating the silence”

This year the multidistrict Lions ITALY chose violence against women and minors as the National Study Theme, a highly contemporary theme, which requires the utmost diffusion and awareness as possible, even more so amongst the youth of today.  The Lions Club in Alghero with the patronage of the local Council has initiated its own awareness campaign in two stages. The first  was a conference, open to the general public on the 1st of March 2013 at the Hotel Catalunya.  The organizing committee was composed of the Lions Maria Dolores Cossu,   Ciampaola Chiappini and Antonella Simula and included the collaboration of the psychologist Maria Giovanna Monte, who underlined certain technical aspects linked to the causes and the consequences of violence in its various forms, further explaining the function of the Centre Against Violence in which she is active.  Prof. Cossu explained the various types of violence that torments women and minors, while the Jurist,  Dr. Chiappini, tackled the legal aspect of the problem.
An artistic contribution was given by the marvelous tones of the local actor and dubbing artist Alessandro Pala, who boasts a long artistic career, having obtained a diploma at the Academy for Arts and Drama Silvio D’Amico and who has lent his voice for Radio Rai tre and for the television program “Alle falde del Kilimangiaro” on numerous occasions; he specifically arrived from Rome to be able to give his contribution to this initiative and did so by reading passages of an extremely touching nature.  The second initiative of the Club was held the day after at two of the local high schools, the Scientific and Technical high schools; here the psychologists Rossella Pinna and Paolo Demartis held an open debate.  Once again, this initiative was enriched by the presence of Alessandro Pala and another noted actress and producer, Chiara Murru, who managed to transmit very strong emotions to the young students and their teachers through a magnificent interpretation of different texts on the theme of violence. At the end of the performance the students were asked to fill in a questionnaire on what they had experienced.  The President of the Lions Club, Vittorio Romerio, the service committee and the entire Club wish to thank the team of the “Project Anti-violence Aurora” of Sassari, managed by the “Andalas de Amistade” association and represented by the psychologists Pinna, Demartis and Monte, the actress Chiara Murru of the theatrical association Spazio T, the actor Alessandro Pala – currently occupied in numerous artistic activities on the mainland, the students, who demonstrated interest and curiosity for the questions raised, the teachers, the headmaster, Mr. Antonello Colledanchise and headmistress, Mrs. Viviana Cuccu.   A special thank you goes to the numerous members of the public present at the evening of the 1st of March, to the Local Council Administration, to the Finance Councillor, Giampaola Scanu for having substituted the Mayor and to the Councillor for Social Services and Culture, the Right.Hon. Romina Caula, who graciously supported the initiative.

PROJECT MARTINA

During the scholastic year 1999-2000 a handful of doctors and Lions members in Padova answered the call of the ONLUS association “Us and Cancer, the Desire to Live” and started to organize assemblies of high school students to inform them about the methods of cancer prevention and care. The idea came from Martina, a young woman who found she had breast cancer. On numerous occasions Martina expressed her desire “to inform and educate the youth of today, so that they would take more care of their health”, as a result, these lectures to students soon became an annual appointment.
The heartbreaking plea from Martina, the positive feedback from the students and their parents and  the results obtained throughout the years – not only in terms of appreciation but also of effectiveness  -  convinced the LIONS doctors to create a website with all the material necessary for the lectures and to transform the Padova experiment from an annual local event into a PROJECT that is coordinated on a national level.

INTERCLUB SERVICE FOR THE COLLECTION OF FUNDS 2012

As is tradition in Alghero, the three service clubs, Rotary, Lions and Panathlon  together with the precious help of the association Fidapa organize a gala evening to collect funds for a charitable cause. In 2012 the amount collected went towards the acquisition of a defibrillator for the emergency department at the local hospital. The Committee thought it fitting to ask for the help of the IPSAR catering school in Alghero, being one of the most representative schools in the town and in that it was a good occasion to allow the students of the school to take an active and of course formative part in such a prestigious social event. The evening was held directly inside the school and proposed a buffet, coordinated by the teaching staff of the catering school and the students, followed by dancing and a lottery. Half of the funds were donated to the designated fund. The organizing committee, composed of Nicola Fois, Franco Piras, Nicolino Spiritu, Luciano Silanos  and the Presidents of the respective Clubs: Rotary, Lions, Panathlon and Fidapa, wish to thank all of those who attended the evening.

Thirty years’ anniversary

This year, the LIONS CLUB in Alghero celebrates its 30th anniversary.
The sincere commitment to spread Lion ideals is reflected in the various activities finalized towards the growth of the community and in the numerous events of human solidarity on every level, be it local, national or international.  The Club is always alert to the problems in society, in the past it has intervened and indeed continues to intervene either directly or in collaboration with the pertinent social and cultural institutions, to promote the execution of various projects and while doing so, more often than not, it often finds itself experimenting unchartered ground, in order to satisfactorily respond to the needs of the community.
The activities of the Club have always been centred on moral obligations and the commitment towards those less fortunate and to those in need, not only in a material way, but also spiritual. The various services are organized in synchronization with the times, but always with consideration towards others. Everything we have learned and experienced throughout our history imposes on us the moral duty to continue that commitment, accompanied by a sign of love and a sentiment of friendship – real friendship, not the bland and vague interpretation of friendship such as passive compliance which merely serves a passing interest.
Once upon a time thirty years would have seemed a lifetime, however the rapidly changing society has the ability to change and shorten real time, even if it is in a virtual sense. Now we find ourselves in a more complex society, with its own new reality and needs, therefore, we are constantly confronted with new demanding challenges, that must be overcome with due respect to those eternal values of the association, while maintaining a continually renewed spirit of belonging.
It is the ability to intercept and recognize new demands of the changing society and the times that has marked the thirty years of our Club. To do this, we require the support of new, energetic and motivated younger members, who can collaborate on all levels, yet respect their relative roles and freedom of thought.
"To live your own life to the full
means offering love, light and hope for tomorrow
to others less fortunate than yourself"
